  • Topics Covered:
  • April 16 & 17, 2013
  • Expanding Horizons for the Early Years 2013 will focus on the continuum of care and the social and emotional factors that shape an individual from the beginning. Scientific evidence strongly indicates that maternal mental health and wellness impacts an infant’s overall development even before birth. As a new baby grows to toddlerhood, it is equally important for practitioners to be aware of social, emotional and cognitive development. Professionals working with infants and families have the capacity to have significant impact on a child’s life trajectory and to improve
  • outcomes through prevention and early intervention.
  • This theme will allow us to explore social and environmental determinants of health and the impact of risk on mental health outcomes for infants and young children. As well, integral topics promoting mental health, understanding brain development, self regulation, attachment, parent/ child attunement, observation, assessment, intervention and support for infants and families, will be woven throughout.
  • Learning objectives: To expand knowledge and increase understanding about the social and emotional wellbeing and development of infants and young children and the influences of family, community, environment and culture
  • To increase understanding of the importance of the prenatal period and early years on lifelong development
  • To expand knowledge of effective assessment and intervention approaches
  • To learn about new and innovative interdisciplinary practices for supporting families, infants and toddlers, and each other
  • To become informed about emerging research findings and evidence-based practice and to consider practical implications for working with families
  • To create opportunities for networking and collaboration among colleagues from diverse areas of interest and practice with infants, young children and their families
  • To learn about tools and resources to support advocacy efforts and promote a global understanding of infant mental health
